Continued positive growth in arrivals to SA

South Africa’s key source markets and emerging markets have both shown growth in tourist arrivals for July.

Overseas arrivals to South Africa are up 19% and total arrivals are up 15% year-to-date compared with 2015. Overseas arrivals are up 9% and total arrivals to South Africa are up 8% year-to-date compared with 2014,.

This is according to the July arrival stats released by Statistics SA on Monday.

Overseas arrivals for July were up 23% compared with the same month last year, while total arrivals were up by 12%.

Spain, Germany and Austria continue to show the highest growth among South Africa's established markets. Arrivals are up 22% year-to-date for Spain, 21% for Germany, and 18% for Austria, Italy and Sweden. Total arrivals year-to-date were 16 393 from Spain, 155 371 from Germany, 13 171 from Austria, 28 881 from Italy, and 22 360 from Sweden.

Year-to-date, other key source markets also experienced growth, with the UK up 12% and the US up 20%. Total arrivals year-to-date from the UK were 253 879 and 199 853 from the US.

Arrivals from France spiked in July, up 40% year on year for the month, with a total of 12 315 arrivals.

July’s year-to-date arrivals from China were up 64%, and arrivals from India were up 28% compared with 2015. Arrivals from Brazil were up 5%. 

Arrivals from emerging growth market, Saudi Arabia, were up 34% for the month of July and up 47% year-to-date compared with 2015. Total arrivals from Saudi Arabia year-to-date were 6 376.
