SOUTH AFRICAN EMBASSY IN ROME: NEWSLETTER
Note from the Ambassador
It is five months since my spouse, Mrs. Ruweida Soni, and I arrived in
the Italian Republic and I took up my new assignment as the Ambassa-
dor of the Republic of South Africa to Italy.
During this period we have met many interesting people, engaged in
many interesting things and visited many interesting places. For this we
Ambassador
Prof, Shirish Soni are truly grateful and humbled.
During this period, we also witnessed the establishment of a new Government in Italy and significant chang-
es in the Government of South Africa.
Although these changes are significant, everything remains the same. Globally the camp of good remains in
the majority and continues to increase in numbers and is growing from strength to strength. The volume of
people’s voices who are demanding that governments do the right things continues to increase.
During 2018, we commemorate the Centenaries of Nelson MANDELA and Albertina Sisulu, two pillars of
our struggle for liberation and architects of our democracy. The Nelson MANDELA Centenary is celebrated
under the theme “Be the Legacy” and the Centenary of Albertina Sisulu is celebrated as “Woman of Forti-
tude”.
I have attached an interesting clip of Albertina Sisulu nominating Nelson Mandela to be the first democrati-
cally elected President of the Republic of South Africa for you, our readers to enjoy.

In Italy and Malta, we commemorated the Nelson MANDELA and Albertina Sisulu Centenaries with a num-
ber of events hosted with strategic partners of the Embassy of South Africa in Rome. We sincerely appreci-
ate the spirit of activism and the long-standing principled and value based approach of all our partners. You
are the legacy.
