SOUTH AFRICAN EMBASSY IN ROME: NEWSLETTER
Africa Day Celebration
African countries celebrated Africa Month in May 2017, with various events held throughout the
African continent and abroad. The highlight of the celebrations was on 25 May, Africa Day,
when Africans commemorate the founding of the Organisation of African Unity in 1963. The Or-
ganisation is now known as the African Union, and it seeks to promote unity and solidarity both
on the continent and with the continent, in pursuance of Africa’s priorities and objectives.
In South Africa, this year Africa Day celebrations were
held during the whole month of May, under the theme
“The Year of OR Tambo: Building a Better Africa and a
Better World”. As President Zuma aptly stated at a high-
level Africa Day event, “the celebration is in honour of
our liberation stalwart and selfless hero, the former
President of the ANC, Mr Oliver Reginald Tambo, who
would have turned 100 years old this year, had he lived”.

Here in Rome, African countries accredited to the Quiri-
nale also hosted different events to celebrate Africa Day.
The Embassy participated in the Art and Culture Exhibi-
tion from 23 to 25 May, where we showcased images of leaders from Africa, along with some
unique artworks and Ndebele, Zulu and Xhosa artefacts. For the Gala Dinner on 25 May, the
Official Chef, Mr Sacha Kingston, flew the flag high by preparing typical South African dishes.
For the diners, it was a special treat!
