SOUTH AFRICAN EMBASSY IN ROME: NEWSLETTER

     Visit by the Gauteng MEC for Art s Culture , Sports and
                                    Recreation

The Gauteng Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Arts, Sports and Recreation, The
Honourable Faith Mazibuko, led a delegation which had a successful study tour to Italy in Janu-
ary 2017. The delegation visited various heritage and cultural preservation sites around Rome.
During their visit, the delegation was impressed by the services offered for the visually impaired
at the Central Library of Rome as well as with the operational systems in use at the library.
While visiting the Nelson Mandela Library, the delegation was exposed to cultural literature, and
the methodologies used to preserve cultural heritage, which they hope will also inform the de-

                                                 velopment of Gauteng’s own library project. The delega-
                                                 tion also visited Bologna and the City of Reggio Emilia, in
                                                 order to meet with educational and local authorities, to dis-
                                                 cuss the operationalization of a cooperation agreement
                                                 that was signed in October 2016 between the Province of
                                                 Gauteng and the Region of Emilia-Romagna.

          Visit by KwaZulu-Natal Portfolio Committee on
                              Arts and Culture

The Chairperson of the KwaZulu-Natal Portfolio Committee on Arts and Culture, Ms Makhoni
Ntuli, led a delegation of Members of the Committee on a successful study tour to Italy in March
2017. The main objective was to learn from the experience of Italian counterparts in the use of
archival and repository systems in the management and preservation of old monuments, arte-
facts and records, as well as the mainstreaming of the arts, culture and heritage in social and
