SOUTH AFRICAN EMBASSY IN ROME: NEWSLETTER
Vredefort Dome -World Heritage Site
The Vredefort Dome, spanning 300 km, is the biggest and oldest
visible meteorite impact structure on earth, characterised by deep
fractures in the underlying rock and spectacular rock formations -
such as the world’s only pink granite. Scientists believe that the
meteorite impact happened about 2023 million years ago. In creat-
ing the huge crater, it is estimated that the meteorite would have
been about 10 km across and travelling at more than 10 km per
second!
The Dome is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with a rich ar-
chaeological and cultural heritage. This is the area where one can
learn the history of South Africa through numerous rock paintings.
Much of South African early history is evident in this area.
