SOUTH AFRICAN EMBASSY IN ROME: NEWSLETTER
AMBASCIATA DEL SUDAFRICA A ROMA: NOTIZIARIO
Note from the Ambassador
Welcome to our last quarterly newsletter for 2016! I hope that you have
been enjoying our previous newsletters, which are designed to keep you
updated on the activities that the South African Embassy in Rome is un-
dertaking in promoting South Africa in the countries to which we are ac-
credited.
The year 2016 marked an important year for our Embassy. We success-
Ambassador fully achieved our objective of promoting South Africa. For example, un-
Ms. Nomatemba Tambo doubtedly the highlight for me was the remarkably successful South Afri-
can Food, Wine and Cultural Festival that we hosted in the beautiful city of Taormina, in Sicily, during which
Italians, tourists and fellow-South Africans joined in celebration of South African Food and Wine and our rich
culture and heritage. The festival also included a Business Seminar on Trade and Investment Opportunities
in the Blue Economy. This newsletter includes separate, more detailed, articles on the Taormina festival and
the seminar. Both are must reads.
This quarter, we bid a sad farewell to Dr Rachel Morake, Corporate Services Manager, Ms JN Mtirara, Third
Secretary Administration, and Dr M Rampedi, Counsellor for Agriculture, whose term of duty has come to an
end. We also welcome the newly appointed Ms J Mphephu, Third Secretary: Political and Ms R Addo, Third
Secretary: Administration.
The steady progress we are making in promoting South Africa would not have been possible had it not been
for the dedicated Embassy staff and the help of our key partners and stakeholders, including South Africa’s
Honorary Consuls. I want to take this opportunity to pay special tribute to you all and to thank you for your
continued support and dedication. I wish you a wonderful holiday season with your loved ones and I look
forward to even stronger cooperation in the New Year. Thank you for your commitment and support in flying
the South African flag high.
