Key messages from Former President Motlanthe mainly focussed on South Africa’s turbulent and violent
journey towards the achievement of reconciliation and peace
Prof. Amato gave an overview of the concepts of restorative justice and retributive justice and further con-
trasted the act of punishment with the process of reconciliation.
Prof. Impagliazzo highlighted the effects of conflicts and xenophobia and how they lead to disunity in many
countries.
The South African example was used as a model which could be adapted according to the unique circum-
stances of other countries that have emerged from situations of violent oppression and conflict. All speakers

stressed the importance of the linkages be-
tween forgiveness, healing and reconcilia-
tion.
All in all, the conference yielded a highly sub-
stantive discussion of issues that are perti-
nent to the critical need for reconciliation for
nation building and healing in countries that
have emerged from conflict. A truly remarka-
ble exchange of insights into this important
process
