           Reconciliation Conference 13 December 2016

In recognition of the importance of National Reconciliation Day, which is celebrated every year on 16 De-
cember in South Africa, the South African Embassy in Rome hosted a high-level conference at the Pontifical
Lateran University on 13 December 2016, under the theme “Reconciliation as a force for change”.

The Keynote speakers were:
1. Former South African President Kgalema Motlanthe,
2. The Rector of the Pontifical Lateran University, H.E. The Most Reverend Mon. Enrico dal Covolo,
3. Former Italian Prime Minister, Prof. Giuliano Amato, and,
4. President of the Community of Sant’Egidio, Prof. Marco Impagliazzo.
The conference was moderated by Mr Ugo Tramballi, of Il Sole 24.
The Most Reverend Enrico dal Covolo, Rector of the Pontifical Lateran University, opened the conference
by stressing the importance of forgiveness in the process of reconciliation as illustrated in the Lord’s prayer
and other biblical parables. Ambassador Tambo stressed the importance of reconciliation in the modern
context and highlighted South Africa’s own journey from conflict to reconciliation.
