Visit by speaker of Parliament : Ms Baleka Mbethe

This year, being the 30th anni-
versary since the establishment
of the international meetings for
peace, the Community of
Sant’Egidio hosted an Interna-
tional meeting under the theme
“Thirst for Peace” where digni-
taries around the world were in-
vited. Honourable Baleka Mbete
and H.E Ambassador Tambo at-
tended a high-profile conference
from 18 to 20 September 2016,
themed “The challenges of glob-
al Africa”, during which the
Speaker delivered an address on “South Africa’s experience of living together in difference, the challenges,
history of reconciliation and how to build peace in Africa and in the world”. A noteworthy highlight of the con-
ference was a luncheon hosted for His Holiness Pope Francis and conference participants.

4th Edition of Jerry Essan Masslo:
Naples: 12-14 October 2016

The Embassy participated in the biennial Jerry Essan Masslo Pre-
mium 4th Edition held on 12-14 October 2016, which was organ-
ised by the National Labour Federation FLAI-CIGL in Caserta.
This year’s event was themed “Migrations: what people escape
from and why. New and old routes between reception, walls and
fears”. Jerry Masslo was a South African who migrated to Italy
during the apartheid era and was subsequently robbed and mur-
dered in Italy. The Embassy further attended the Masslo award
ceremony where students, artists and individuals were honoured for their short stories of migrants in the
Italian communities.
