SOUTH AFRICAN EMBASSY IN ROME: NEWSLETTER









                                                       Note from the Ambassador











                                                           After five wonderful and fascinating years, it is time to leave Italy to as-

                                                           sume my new responsibilities as South Africa’s High Commissioner in


                                                           London. I am sad to leave Italy and the team of dedicated officials at the

                                                           Embassy. I have been privileged to work with such a dedicated team of

                                                           officials,  Honorary  Consuls,  friends  and  contacts  during  my  term  in


                                                           Rome.

                                                           between South Africa and Italy, Albania, Malta and San Marino. In partic-

                                                      ular, I have enjoyed participating in economic diplomacy initiatives, which

         have strengthened my friendships with many wonderful people and created new networking opportunities.


         The partnerships that we have established with different stakeholders to ensure the success of the various

         projects that the Embassy has initiated are very special to me.  Thank you all so much!



         I have visited many regions in Italy, on both official business as well as a tourist, and discovered the beauty

         of Italy in terms of the people, food, cultural heritage and diversity. I will cherish forever the experience that I

         gained.



         Now a few words on some Embassy highlights of the past quarter:


         We  hosted  a  very  successful  Conference  on  Financial  and  Economic  Matters  from  27  to  28  November

         2017. The Deputy Minister of Finance, Honorable Sfiso Buthelezi, the Governor of the South Africa Reserve


         Bank, Mr Lesetja Kganyago, and other key role players in the fields of finance from South Africa and Italy at-

         tended the Conference and participated in open discussions with their Italian counterparts and other experts


         on their respective views on recent financial and economic developments. The focus of the Conference was

         to identify new areas for bilateral cooperation between South African and Italian financial and economic in-


         stitutions.


         The Embassy also facilitated the visit to Italy by the Gauteng Provincial Legislature Portfolio Committee on

         Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture. The Honorary Consul in Florence, Mr Riccardo Sarra, ensured that the


         visit was a success by providing the necessary support to the delegation. In Addition, the Embassy also wel-

         comed the visit to Italy by the Executive Mayor of the Metro of Ekurhuleni, Cllr Mzwandile Masina, and his


         delegation to attend the “Cities of Africa” Conference that was hosted by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Af-

         fairs and International Cooperation on 15 November 2017. We also welcomed the visit by Deputy Minister

         Jeffery to attend the Conference on “A World Without Death Penalty” hosted by the Community of
