Sant’Egidio in Rome from 27 to 29 November 2017, and the OR Tambo Centenary Celebrations hosted by
the City of Reggio Emilia from 30 November to 2 December 2017. These visits helped to further strengthen
our bilateral relations.
In this edition, we focus on the beautiful Free State Province in our feature on popular tourist destinations in
South Africa.
This quarter, the Embassy is also bidding farewell to Ms Mpho Oliphant, First Secretary Political, whose
term of duty has come to an end. I want to take this opportunity to thank her for her passion and the dedi-
cation she displayed when executing her duties.
I wish you all a joyful, peaceful Christmas and prosperous New Year. I really appreciate your friendship dur-
ing the last five wonderful years. Till we meet again, Arrivederci!
Economic
Conference and Workshop on Financial and Economic Matters
The Embassy successfully hosted a high-level Conference on Financial and Economic Matters in Rome
from 27 to 28 November 2017. This was the first bilateral initiative of its kind, where leaders from the Minis-
tries of Finance, the Central Banks, top bankers and economic actors from Italy and South Africa gathered
to discuss recent developments in our respective financial and economic sectors, as well as identify possi-
ble news areas of collaboration.
The Conference provided a platform for robust and open
discussions on pertinent matters in, inter alia, improving
the integrity, productivity and efficiency of the banking
sector; preventing and combating financial crimes; in-
vestment and financing of public sector projects as well
as public-private partnerships.
