JOHANNESBURG - ITALY-AFRICA, A “PEACEKEEPING” COURSE FOR CONFLICT
MANAGEMENT
Italy and the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna of Pisa are assuming a growing role in international peacekeeping
training activities in Africa. A new course, promot-
ed in partnership with St. Augustine College, has
just started in Johannesburg. It is tailored for 50
civil servants from numerous African countries
who intend to sign up for United Nations or African
Union peacekeeping missions in the African conti-
nent.
The course, which is due to end on Friday, 20
May, will be taught by numerous African personali-
ties and South African scholars who have dedicat-
ed all their activities to conflict prevention. The
course, whose scientific director is Andrea de
Guttry, professor of International Law at the Scuo-
la Superiore Sant’Anna of Pisa, and director of the
Dirpolis Institute (Diritto, Politica, Sviluppo – Law,
Policy, Development), will be inaugurated by the
Italian Ambassador in South Africa, Pier Giovanni
Donnici, and by His Majesty Goodwill Zwelithini,
King of the Zulu, who was invited to deliver the lectio magistralis scholarly lecture to open the course. Good-
will Zwelithini thanked Italy and the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna of Pisa for the contribution made in the last
years by training the personnel engaged in peacekeeping operations in several African Countries.
SOUTH AFRICA WINS DIPLOMATIC SERVICE AWARD
South Africa recently received the Distinguished Diplomatic Service
Award from The World Affairs Council in Washington, DC. The award
was received by His Excellency, Mninwa Mahlangu, Ambassador of
South Africa to the United States. The World Affairs Council Honours
recognise organisations who demonstrate an outstanding commit-
ment to global education, international affairs and global communica-
tions.
“South Africa is truly humbled to receive this prestigious award,” said
Maite Nkoana-Mashabane, International Relations and Cooperation His Excellency, Mninwa Mahlangu, Ambas-
Minister, South Africa. “This recognition will further inspire and encour- sador of South Africa to the United States.

One of the areas where South Africa partners with the World Affairs Council is the Global Education Teacher
Exchange program. This speaks to the commitment to the promotion of education and training as a tool of
empowerment for individuals and society as a whole.
